The city of New York warns residents of a new scam that focuses on people on the parking meters.

Authorities say that the QR codes lead to malignant third-party websites that ask for credit card details, while they notice that the legitimate ways to pay for parking in New York via the ParknyC app or on the meters themselves are.

As mentioned by New York Dot Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez,
“Beware: focus on scammers on parking meters, and we want you to be vigilant. If you see a QR code in a parking meter, don’t scan it and report it. This is a scams to collect your payment information and we work with law enforcement to keep the responsible person responsible.”
According to the press release, the authorities started aggressively combating the schedule by carrying out city-wide inspections, removing the QR codes and setting ways for residents to report fake QR codes. If a fake QR code is seen, residents are asked to break it down and contact Parknyc.
