The US, Japan and South Korea have established a high-level consultative body that was designed to combat the cyber activities of North Korea.
An important goal of the new group is to prevent cyber attacks and crypto robberies from being used to finance the weapons development of North Korea, including the nuclear program, according to the Office of National Security of South Korea.
The consultative body will “strengthen the ability of the three countries to jointly respond to global cyber threats,” added the South Korean office.
According to the framework, US, Japan and Zuid -Korea will keep every three -month meetings to improve cooperation in this area.
Anne Neuberger, deputy assistant of the president and deputy -national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies at the US National Security Council (NSC), agreed to the establishment of the consultative organ with counterparts from South Korea and Japan in Washington.
In a digital press conference on October 18, Neuberger said that the Noord -Korean hacking of cryptocurrency infrastructure around the world “is an important source of income for the regime that is used to finance the progressing of the rocket program and the much greater number of lancings that we have seen in the past year.”
“Tackling North Korean hacking is a priority of the United States,” said Neuberger.
In addition to international collaborations to tackle these attacks, the US government has punished a number of crypto exchanges that are used by North Korean groups and other threat actors to launder stolen funds.
In June 2023, a high Biden-Administration officer claimed that cyber attacks are 50% of the income of foreign currency of Pyongyang, where the regime tries to circumvent international sanctions to finance its military ambitions.
The establishment of the consultative body follows an agreement between the three countries to set up a new trilateral working group to combat the cyber threats of Noord -Korea at a meeting of August 2023 in Camp David in the US.
